Lawang Sewu, The Legacy of The Dutch Colonial

Lawang Sewu is an ancient building, this building was built when the Dutch colonization of around 1904. Originally the building was used as the corporate headquarters rail (tram) of the Netherlands, known as Nederlandsch Indishe Spoorweg Naatschappij (NIS). These three-storey building made of classic art deco style is magnificent and quite fancy at the time. This building is the work of the Dutch architect, Prof. Jacob F Klinkhamer and BJ Queendag.

Lawang Sewu is currently located on the east side Tugu Muda Semarang, or on the street corner between Pandanaran and Pemuda. This building is called Lawang Sewu (Thousand Doors), because the building looks like has a lot of doors. In fact, the door of this building is not that much. This building just has a lot of height and width window, so people often think of it as a door.
